May I recommend? BOOK GIVEAWAY
by ChristaWells
***Forgot to update you HERE that we did have a winner last Friday! Sandi got her copy of To Make a Life and a copy of “Image of God” (EP) this week and reports that she is very pleased with both.
Thanks for playing. Come again!***
Come, friends,
Step with me into a world where I get really excited about the books I’ve been reading
and convince you to add them to your must-read list. :)
I picked this up at Portland’s infamous Powell’s City of Books (a place I could call home – the bookstore) and read the whole thing before we got to Seattle. I’ve already shared my copy with an aspiring young writer. It’s just … so true and packed with great bits of insight for all people, really, but especially artists.
“If we’re free from the burden of trying to be completely original, we can stop trying to make something out of nothing, and we can embrace influence instead of running away from it.”
Austin Kleon is funny and honest and brilliant and put into words better than I have what I’ve been trying to communicate to student artists in my summer workshops at Masterpiece.
Maybe next year, I’ll just read to them. :)
My friend Vaneetha never, ever fails me when it comes to good books on my birthday. This sister knows me, and we share a hunger for provocative, soul-widening, faith-driven writing. I’m only a couple of chapters in, but Mark Buchanan has already taken my breath away with not only the ideas he presents, but the artful way in which he presents them.
“We want Him to be comfortable rather than comforting…peaceable, to keep His peace…rather than peacemaking and peace giving. And instead of being our hiding place, we would prefer that God be our ace in the hole. And if that doesn’t work, we’d prefer to hide from Him.”
“There are men and women–you know a few–who live in the holy wild, the place far beyond the borderland, where God is God, not safe, but good.”
“We long for hearsay about God, but do not ourselves want to hear God say anything.”
LOVE the way he uses language. And let me warn you…the man pulls no punches.
And last, but certainly not least…this gem of a book, the first published by Daniel Walser: to make a life.
Don’t let the simplicity of the book jacket fool you. This book is complex and gut-wrenching and gorgeous in its raw but poetic telling of the story of infertility, dashed hope, baffled faith, and inexplicable loss lived out by Walser & his wife Julia.
“In the months that followed, two equally potent forces perpetually framed my thoughts: fear and guilt. Fear for a barren future and my wife’s dreams forever deferred. Guilt that it would be my fault, my defect, my hammer pounding the nail into the coffin lid…And I did not pray…When the solidity of your God is dependent on the gifts he gives you, the moment you do not get what you want, he is weakened, neutralized, lesser. Why then ask of him?…It seemed far more logical to shake off the betrayal from Santa and go get those gifts myself.”
He articulates with precision the rarely heard perspective of a man grieving the loss of his unborn child.
“I begged God to raise her from the dead. Crazy? I didn’t think so. I pleaded with the Almighty. My heart nearly dislodged with the force of yearning behind each appeal. I became a desperate, dime-store lawyer stating my case before what I hoped would be a fair and righteous judge.”
But for me personally, the real treasure in his writing is less the narrative of what happened and much more the insider story of grief that follows. How we who stand outside often unintentionally fail those inside the “burning house,” how God does not, how we can help by being willing to enter into the flames rather than trying to simply extinguish them.
(Daniel is a master of powerful metaphor, and the burning house image is probably my favorite page of the book for the way it spoke to me personally.)
Daniel quite vulnerably brings us into the space where he wrestled with God in hope and heartache, resentment and anger, so we can also see what might possibly come from all those ashes.
This story is for all of us: those who have hoped and been disappointed, those who mourn, and those who want to understand how to enter the mourning of others.
WIN A COPY OF TO MAKE A LIFE & YOUR CHOICE OF ONE OF MY ALBUMS
I hardly ever think to do giveaways (I know, bad blogger), but that’s what we’re doing here today. So let’s make it fun, shall we?
Leave a comment here with a favorite lyric from one of my songs, and I will enter your name in the drawing for a copy of To Make a Life (which is available for Kindle or paperback at Daniel’s website AND at Amazon, by the way, in case you don’t win it here).
Will draw & announce the winner Friday afternoon.
“And may the odds be EVER in your favor!”

And I am talking about the books that I’ve been reading when the house is dark and still
Great job, Joanna.
And now I’m smiling because I realize no one else needs to think about it! Ha! Small oversight on my part. I’ll need to modify. But your name is officially in.
When the house is dark and still.
These sound like great books! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
You’re welcome! I always love book recommendations, too.
I was raised not to ask to be kissed, otherwise I would’ve.
Thanks for the book suggestions!
ah, the Irish love song! You’re welcome. Thanks for playing!
Mark! My absolute favorite author, I think!
I miss you and dream of having enough courage to call.
Did I mention that I miss you?
Really?! I didn’t know! (about Mark being your favorite)
Thank you…was thinking of YOU just this morning, maybe when you posted this?
“Thank you for catching me down in the mouth–you ambushed me with delight…”
I “discovered” your music through Tim Challies blog…delightful!
Oh, Tim was so gracious to share my music with his readers. Glad and thankful you took the trouble to follow him over here. My Best Remedy, yes
.
“I’ve been climbing my whole life and I’m only at the bottom of the mountain.”
Love the suggestions!
Settle! I’ve thought of you over the summer…did you make it out to Nashville in June??
“My bow is on the strings. I’m beginning to learn where to find the words to the song that emptiness sings…”
=)
oh my just one line…panning for gold until I have all I can hold…
well it’s a tie…the bow is on the strings…glory to God with is how emptiness sings~
You do have a lot of that gold, I believe, Miss RO. ever thankful for your warm notes. Thank you!
All the words, all the words…
looking for patterns in the shapes
You’re so good
to be a witness to my sounds
trying to frame the clouds
I also really love the lyric about reading books, but this one speaks to my singing and writing heart!
Thanks for your words and your music–can’t wait to read ‘Steal Like An Artist’…! Blessings to you!
oh, you’ll love it. i love that you “get” this one, Frame the Clouds, that it rings true to your singing, writing heart.
Thank you.
“You’ve dried up the pools/That’ve kept you alive/They were never intended/For long-term survival….He’s all that you need/There’s no way to earn/What you’ve already got/Nothing to lose/When you’re loved from the start…”
But I feel like I put almost all of How Emptiness Sings on here
Thanks, Rebecca!
“i’ve carried this a long time in a well hidden bundle on my back. but i’ve realized repentance is weightless, so i’ll leave my burnden on the tracks.”
my eight year old daughter walks around semi-singing the words to “set free”. she heard it in my sister’s (laura piper) car this summer twice. i must get that cd for our family so she can finally get the words correct!
Well, Laura really should be on the payroll for all the advertising she does.
Glad your daughter likes it. You can also download from iTunes, if you’re that kind of girl.
Hey, Sandi, you are the winner! I’ll get in touch and get your album preference and address! Congratulations!

We are not free if we can’t give freely/
If we live to have, we don’t have anything
I have to be honest that I’ve never listened to your music (Dan’s sister directed me here for the giveaway) so I read the lyrics online. I liked what I read so I’m looking forward to giving it a listen.
Hi, Steph, welcome!
I’m glad you stopped by!
I don’t know where “sister” came from…I meant his aunt.
[...] to Christa’s site now, and post a comment for a chance to [...]
Oh my…how to choose just one lyric??? There are so many favorites. I love all of the ones listed above. But this one comes to mind…real, wry, disarming, and convicting:
“We do some talking but we’re easily frightened back to the sofa with our vanilla pudding. Is it time to lay our comfort down; time to give until it hurts; empty our cup into our brother’s hand; is this the kingdom coming.”
So glad this lyric did end up working. It was one of those that made me go: Really, Christa? You sure you want to keep that pudding part in there?
ha!
“We read the papers, but we cannot fathom
The poverty and violence that happens
And in our neighborhoods the wealthy are starving, too
We are surrounded by the underfed, so
Load our shoulders with some water and bread, Lord
Take us to the hungry, show us what Love can do ”
-And-
Clay vessels molded for his own
Shall we question him who holds and shapes us for his perfect use
Soul breather, making all things new
You’re making all things new
I agree, it’s hard to pick just one. I think I could come up with twenty or more in under a minute. I guess I’ll go with this:
“If there’s a God who would enter humanity
to capture the love of a rebel like me
I want to know His name
I wanna know that man
I wanna know that man
I wanna know that man . . .”
Thanks for sharing all of these awesome books! I’d like to read every one!
Thank you, Mary!
There’s no way to earn
what you’ve already got.
“Nothing to lose when you’re loved from the start” Christa, I am new to your music and think it is sweet. I LOVE Daniel Walser’s book. Thanks for the giveaway! How fun.
“A thousand things are happening tonight
You’re gonna cry yourself to sleep
A thousand miracles you’ll have to wait and see”
Love the hope this song gives.
How are we supposed to choose just one lyric? There are so many that have left a mark in my heart. But it’s this chorus that I love:
All the things I pursue
Well, they stay for a season,
Then everything moves,
Everything moves, oh
My towers fall,
But you aren’t leaving me
‘Cause everything moves but you
“You’re gonna’ cry yourself to sleep, you’re gonna’ soak the pillow . . .In spite of the ache that doesn’t go away, you’ll be sharing your story one rainy day . . . You didn’t know. A thousand things are happening in this one thing . . . WRAP yourself in promise. . .” So many times, hundreds of times, I have listened to this song and rested knowing our God is so much bigger than this one thing happening . . . wait and see. Miracles. Love you Christa.
One favorite? Are you kidding me?!
“my savior steals me from the night”
Dear Christa,
Thank you for the book recommendations; will add them to my to-read list! I appreciate the thoughtful writing you share here, as well as your soul-nourishing songs that point to God and the beauty of who He is.
Thank you for taking the time and love to prayerfully write and wrestle with these reflections/experiences that are molded into songs. My three favourites are “Emptiness Sings,” “Everything Moves But You,” and “Image of God.”
A favourite lyric (that means a lot to me and has blessed/encouraged me) is from “Emptiness Sings”:
“But oo, [his/her/my] bow is on the strings, / And the tune resonates in the open space / To show us how emptiness sings:
Glory to God, glory to God! / In fullness of wisdom, / He writes my story into His song, / My life for the glory of God.”
Since I have to choose. My favorite is… “You’re gonna’ cry yourself to sleep, you’re gonna’ soak the pillow” I just lost my 26 yr. old niece to suicide this is the 2nd in 10 yrs. in our family and my pillow has been soaked since I got the news.
M. Waters
There are so many of your lyrics that speak so powerfully. Here are a couple (hope listing two doesn’t disqualify me, I just couldn’t pick just one).
“This is what it means to be held, how it feels, when the sacred’s been torn from your life and you survive. This is what it is to be loved and to know that the promise was when everything fell, we’d be held.”
“It’s the devil in a satin gown, so don’t, don’t call it love, don’t call it love. Cause love wraps herself around the wound and weeps while she speaks truth, so don’t call this love.”
PLEASE let me win. We just lost our daughter on the day we were to deliver her…just 2 hours short of the scheduled c-section her heart stopped due to a blod clot…I would love to get a book of encouragement and hope. God is sustaining, and am thankful…books are helping me so much.
The Held song is what is really ministering to me right now…I forgot to list something
This is what it means to be held, how it feels, when the sacred’s been torn from your life and you survive. This is what it is to be loved and to know that the promise was when everything fell, we’d be held
“Trying to frame the clouds”
I feel like this is what I try to do when I have long conversations with friends – your song captured it. Thank you. And thanks for the giveaway!
got the steal like an artist book. our son loved it…and already putting ideas into practice. thanks for the recommendation.
Oh, that’s great!! So happy when book recommendations work out.
Hey Christa! Was scrolling threw this post after visiting your kickstarter page (will definitely donate!) and you’re not going to believe it…but I bought Steal Like An Artist! But not only did we buy the exact same book we bought it the exact same weekend in the exact same city and the exact same bookstore- Powell’s City of Books haha! I sat there on those purple steps reading through it. Love it! And I love you. Must text you the picture Joe took of us that day in Seattle. Hope to see you soon!
